My “old timey photo” take on Mazzone’s Bakery, Clark Avenue in Cleveland, as published for John Hyduk’s article in Cleveland Magazine’s February, 2010, issue.
Wow was I floored when asked to use my 4x5 view camera for a late-December assignment for Cleveland Magazine. I managed to find some Tri-x film frozen in my old dorm fridge in the basement. I blew out the film holders that have sat idle for several years, and as I found the notch on each sheet it was like riding a bicycle: you never forget how to load 4x5.
So there I was on a 20º, salt-slush Cleveland day, with tripod, view camera, darkcloth—and 1º Pentax Spotmeter: reading and placing the shadows; putting the loupe to the ground glass; correcting and distorting perspective. It was a wonderful time, and I got to share it with friend/assistant Bruce Edwards and CleMag AD Stephanie Antal. Bruce wanted to see a 4x5 in action. Stephanie was there to art direct, and as her toes froze, she was also subjected to stories of photography “Back in The Day.”
